country, every official and individual that's involved in this process. >> reporter: she spoke just moments after her release and boarded a plane to neighboring oman where her mother was waiting. >> i know how much effort has gone into this and i'm extremely grateful. >> reporter: shourd was arrested with two others, hiking near the border of iran- iraq. her fiance shane bauer and friend josh fattal were all charged with spying. initially short's family said they couldn't pay, but it's still not clear who did pay shourd's bail since the u.s. has no diplomatic relations with aran. the swiss diplomates handled. >> if the question was did the

united states government pay anything for this release, the answer is no. >> the white house put out a statement saying president obama was pleased with shourd's release but that bauer and fatal were still in jail although they had committed no crime. no one saying when or if they will get a trial. there's no indication the iranian government is listening to calls for their release. joel brown reporting. >> iran's president said shourd was offered bail on compassionate grounds for health reasons. a man may have kidnapped a very young boy. we have more on the suspect and the circumstances. >> reporter: 37-year-old tony robinson is wanted on drug charges. before police could arrest him he fled. he took 5-year-old tony, jr. with him. robinson had been in a custody battle with the mother. he found out he was not child's

patricia jessamy's record. it's a choice for voters, 15- year incumbent patricia jessamy running on her record or challenger gregg bernstein who calls jessamy ineffective. both were at polling places to ask for votes. the campaign has been anything but friendly with bernstein tapping into some voter discontentment. >> miss jessamy is the highest paid prosecutor in the state and her office has the lowest conviction rate. >> i'm getting violent criminals off the state. >> reporter: she's had the backing of the political establishment and he has the support of the police union and the personal support of the police commissioner who placed a bernstein sign in his yard, infuriating jessamy. >> having a prosecutor, who is a rubber stamp for the police, should be something that the citizens of this city do not

morning and headed to the polls at 7:00 when they opened and he has been working all day long trying to get the last-minute votes. his challenger is an early riser. my colleague adam may is following joe bartenfelder and that campaign. >> reporter: he has a lot of support in this hear but this afternoon joe bartenfelder is here invading his territory. he's reaching out to voters who- - and trying to gain support. while many politicians roll up their sleeves for the tv camera, joe bartenfelder takes it a step further, reloving his campaign shirt so he can vote. bartenfelder's campaign showcases blue collar rule as an elected official. >> he's an honest joe. >> reporter: some political observers say his likability

welcome back. i'm mary bubala covering the baltimore county primary executive race. it is a beautiful day. this is the type of weather that election officials pray for. they have got it. they cannot blame low voter turnout on the weather this year. meteorologist bernadette woods is in the first warning weather center following this gorgeous fall day. >> you loved it so much you went outside, right? >> it's a nice day to be out there, not a blizzard. >> this is where we topped out so far, 80 degrees. that's just on par with our averages. the cold front already moved through, so the temperatures are on the way down. so across the state 76 in

baltimore. 80 in d.c. the dew point has dropped so much. with that cold front going by the winds have turned around to the northwest. they're reinforcing the already dry air. these winds have been gusting over 20 miles an hour. the combination of that and the dry conditions has prompted red flag warning in effect for the eastern shore and for the rest of the counties that you see shaded in. what that is, if you read the entire statement a high threat for fire danger. the winds will start to subside tonight but the dry weather will continue into tomorrow. then we see the chance for rain coming our way that chance isn't until thursday night. it's because of this storm system right in here if you saw the kansas city game, this is the rain that was pounding them. it's all a part of that storm. some of it is going to move our way. so tomorrow a lot of sunshine, patchy clouds. on thursday the clouds start to increase as the storm gets closer. it's a fast mover.

the chance for rain thursday into friday and gets out in time for the weekend. as far as the tropics, igor is a category four, winds 132 miles an hour. it's starting to make that turn to the west, northwest. that keeps it over the water for the most part. the biggest track is bermuda, but it's moving so slowly that we'll still be talking about this through the weekend. farther out is julia. it is strengthening 86 miles an hour, moving to the west, northwest. this track keeps it over water. another area closer to home that we're really paying attention to is this area of disturbed weather. hurricane hunters are flying into it and this could become our next tropical storm in the next 24 hours. igor looks like it will strengthen as it moves off to the now. our waters we have small craft

investigating the jets for sexually harassing behavior toward as reporter from new mexico. she was on the side lines during saturday's practice when jet players and coaches appeared to throw footballs in her direction. then later, as she waited in the locker room to do this interview with quarterback mark sanchez, she was reportedly the target of cat calls and rude comments. she tweeted i'm so uncomfortable. i'm not jets locker room trying not to look around. and i want to cover my ears. it's making for embarrassing headlines for the jets a the -- jets and the nfl. cbs sports leslie visser, a member of the hall of fame and pioneering sports journalists said there's no room for the

boys will be boys men. she leaves it up to the nfl to determine whether disciplinary action is necessary. >> i really believe that they find that they need to punish someone, they will do it. if they find it necessary, i really trust in what they say. >> reporter: still, it doesn't mean the jets are clear of any legal trouble. >> if people around her saw it as sexual harassment, then it could be actionable even though she's not clear on whether she wants to file a lawsuit yet. >> reporter: no word on how long the investigation might take. she said she believes the jets are taking it seriously and calling it one bad experience. >> she said the nfl started the investigation 10 hours after the alleged incident occurred. the trial began for the man accused of killing a maryland meat intive. aiden hart had just finished pitching in a game for the los angeles angels when the car he was in collided with a mini

van. he was killed. police say the mini van driver had a blood alcohol level limit nearly three times the legal limit. some disturbing new information about the iowa farm at the center of a massive salmonella outbreak. an investigation found wright county received more than 400 positive tests for assume spam between that 2008 and 2010. that's according to a congress pal committee looking into the outbreak. 73 of those positive results at wright county egg was the same strain of salmonella responsible for the recent problems. new details today about a deadly mid-air collision between a tour helicopter and a small plane over the hudson river. kai's in the newsroom. he said there were a series of troubling mistakes. >> the federal safety officials met to discuss the findings.

that report found that an air traffic controller was distracted with a personal phone call right before the crash which caused the pilot have the small plane to be on the wrong radio frequency. controllers were unable to reach the pilot moments later to warn him. the pilots of both aircraft overlooked alert in their cockpits right before the accident. >> the ntsb is meeting to discuss the cause of the crash and make safety recommendations to prevent future accidents. an american scientist working in an arguments ca has -- antarctica has been evacuated to new zealand. the sign this was working on a face run by the national science foundation. he is now recovering at a hospital in new zeeland. breaking news from paris where the hiefl tower and the area surrounding it -- eiffel tower and the area surrounding

it have been evacuated. police officers were under the famous tower. tourists are still on the nearby sidewalks land road traffic continues to circulate. we, of course, will keep you posted. the bay area gas explosion that killed at least four people is causing worries about gas pipelines all over the country and the latest images from thursday's explosion shows how horrible it was. we have the report from san bruno, california, with the latest. >> reporter: new images are now emerging. cell phone video that captured the sudden violent nightmare on the ground. >> i don't want nobody to go through -- i thought it was an earthquake but thought this was worse. >> reporter: it looked like an earthquake from this surveillance video. customers fall to the ground. some diving for cover eye opened the front door and saw that flame and that was it. >> reporter: residents in san

bruno had little time to react. in an instant at least four people died and 37 homes were burned to the ground. >> i can't get that roaring sound out of my mind and that big boom and the sight of that enormous blast of fire. >> reporter: this security video from a gas station shows just how quickly things went from normal to chaotic. flames began to fill the screen. what can't be seen is what residents felt. >> the house is off the foundation because the explosion was tremendous. the houses went like that. >> reporter: federal officials are investigating the section of pipe that ruptured and determining how many lines around the country could be at risk for a similar explosion. >> according to federal records there have been fleerly 3,000 gas pipeline accident notice last 20 years. more than a third caused deaths or major illness -- injuries.

the jury convicted rod blagojevich after a two and a half month trial. the jury was deadlocked on the other charges. the attorney is calling for the judge to override the decision. prosecutors say they plan to retry the other charges early next year. it is primary election dpai. voters here in maryland and six other states along with the district of columbia go to the polls today. mary? >> reporter: we're going to talk about delaware for just a moment this might be one of the smallest states in the nation, but what happened just over maryland's border is a very big deal today. tara mergener takes a look. >> reporter: the tea party as its sights set on delaware. >> not celebrating yet. >> reporter: two weeks ago christine o'donnell was a long

shot a former marketing consultant up against long time congressman. but then a check came for o'connell. the republican establishment acted quickly pouring money and political muscle behind castle worrying if o'donnell wins, she's too far to the right for november. >> i have the only candidate with a chance of wenning in the general election. >> reporter: while the tea party has always boasted big numbers, now this has deep pockets. it's political action committee or pac has raised and spent $5 million. >> the movement has been able to pull together money quickly. that lends an aura of responsible. >> reporter: 4 million more

republicans than democrats have gone to the polls and there's an enthusiasm gap between the two but some worry these bitter primary fights will only help the democrats come november. tara mergener reporting, wjz eyewitness news. >> reporter: there is candidate in today's gubernatorial primary. his name is brian murphy. people know him because he was endorsed by sarah palin. we'll see what happens to his numbers. let's take a look at voter turnout. it is extremely low and there's a really good comparison. back in 2006 when there was a gubernatorial primary contest, in baltimore city they had 24% voter turnout. well, right now, as of 4:00, it's only at 8%. i know there's a couple of hours to go but that's quite the difference. baltimore county in 2006 voter

police. he was killed and the house was set on fire. the man is charged with kidnapping, murder and sexual assault. >> the other suspect will go on trial next month. both could face the death penalty. the consumer product safety commission launches its own investigation in a spring of unexplained child deaths. since twef -- 2007, 10 children have died inside houses on the base. now investigators are looking into toxic drywall. one of the homes in question initially tested positive for toxic drywall. a florida woman file last lawsuit after she says doctors circumcised her newborn son against her wishes. after giving birth, the doctors asked her several times if she wanted to haveler son sir

the front that gave the wind this afternoon is still sinking to the south. it's residual warm air. 68 in oakland. because the breeze is out of the west, northwest, as high as 20 in some spots we have the red flag warning for fire danger. the northern counties and eastern shore, jersey and the rest of this telling us to be careful out there because even though we had the rain earlier this week, it's still relatively dry in the wood ands. so be careful when lighting materials, particularly the next several days because we'll have dry conditions. there is a bit of rain developing over kansas, missouri. looks like another front will start ling in our direction. it's a warm front. that will get through the region thursday afternoon and may give us a brief period of showers, not a whole lot of rain. most of this will go to our
